LangChat ("we," "our," or "us") is committed to protecting your privacy. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, disclose, and safeguard your information when you use our mobile application.

Information We Collect

We collect information that you provide directly to us, including:

  • Account Information: Name, email address, and password when you create an account
  • Language Profile: Target languages, proficiency levels, learning goals, and preferences you set during onboarding
  • Voice Data: Audio recordings of your conversations with AI tutors (processed in real-time and not stored permanently)
  • Community Data: Messages and interactions in community chat rooms
  • Usage Data: Session history, practice patterns, progress data, and app interaction data
  • Payment Information: Subscription and purchase data processed through Apple App Store

How We Use Your Information

We use the information we collect to:

  • Provide personalized language tutoring and conversation practice
  • Process your voice input and provide real-time AI tutor responses
  • Facilitate community chat room interactions
  • Track your progress, points, and leaderboard rankings
  • Process transactions and manage your subscription
  • Send you updates and promotional communications (with your consent)
  • Improve our services and develop new features

Third-Party AI Data Processing

LangChat uses artificial intelligence to power its language tutoring features. AI processing is provided by OpenAI, L.L.C. ("OpenAI"), a third-party service. Before any of your data is sent to OpenAI, the app will ask for your explicit consent through an in-app consent screen. You may decline or revoke this consent at any time in the app's Settings. If you decline, AI-powered features will not be available.

What Data Is Sent to OpenAI

When you use AI-powered features and have granted consent, the following data may be transmitted to OpenAI's servers for processing:

  • Voice Audio: Real-time audio recordings of your speech during voice conversation sessions with AI tutors
  • Text Input: Any text messages you type during chat-based tutoring sessions
  • Language Profile Context: Your target language, proficiency level, and current lesson context, used to personalise AI tutor responses
  • Conversation History: Recent messages within an active tutoring session, used to maintain conversational context

We do not send your name, email address, payment information, or any other account identifiers to OpenAI.

Purpose of AI Data Processing

Data is sent to OpenAI solely to:

  • Generate real-time AI tutor responses in your target language
  • Provide pronunciation feedback and grammar corrections
  • Adapt lesson difficulty and conversational scenarios to your proficiency level

Data Retention & Security

  • Voice audio is streamed in real-time and is not stored permanently by LangChat or OpenAI after processing
  • All data is transmitted using TLS encryption
  • LangChat uses OpenAI's API with the zero data retention policy — input and output data is not used by OpenAI to train or improve their models
  • You may revoke your AI data consent at any time from the app's Settings, which will immediately stop all data transmission to OpenAI

Community Features

When you participate in community chat rooms, your messages and profile information may be visible to other users. Please be mindful of the information you share in these public spaces.

Data Sharing & Third-Party Services

We share your information only with the following third-party service providers, and only as necessary to operate the app:

  • OpenAI (AI Processing): Voice audio, text input, and language profile context are sent to OpenAI to provide AI-powered tutoring features. This requires your explicit in-app consent. See "Third-Party AI Data Processing" above for full details.
  • RevenueCat (Subscription Management): Subscription status and purchase identifiers are shared with RevenueCat to manage your subscription. No personal information such as your name or email is shared.
  • Clerk (Authentication): Your email address and authentication credentials are processed by Clerk to provide secure sign-in functionality.
  • Legal Requirements: We may disclose information when required by law or to protect our legal rights.

We do not sell your personal information to any third party.

Data Security

We implement appropriate technical and organizational measures to protect your personal information. However, no method of transmission over the Internet is 100% secure.

Your Rights

Depending on your location, you may have the right to:

  • Access the personal information we hold about you
  • Request correction of inaccurate data
  • Request deletion of your data
  • Opt out of marketing communications
  • Export your data in a portable format

Children's Privacy

Our app is not intended for children under 13. We do not knowingly collect information from children under 13.
